Canon EOS M50 is a popular mirrorless camera that can shoot up to 4K. It comes with a 15-45mm kit lens, which is perfect for vlogging. |
Does Canon M50 Shoot 4K Video?
Yes, Canon EOS M50 can shoot 4K video. However, you should know a few things before switching to 4K and hit the record button. Both 3840×2160 and 1920×1080 resolutions are relatively similar from a layman’s standpoint. The experts can do the distinction in the post-production, but it’s hard for a common man to differentiate them. Here are three essential elements to know before start recording your 4K footage on Canon EOS M50:
Video System: PAL vs. NTSC
When you’re on the NTSC video setting and want to record in 4K, then the camera offers 23.98 fps, whereas when you’re on the PAL video setting, then the camera shoots 4K in 50 fps. It may not make much difference from a beginner’s standpoint, but experts may take these settings into considerations.
Cropped View
One of the essential things to note before buying the Canon EOS M50 for 4K videos is that the kit lens doesn’t do justice to the 4K video quality as it crops the videos in 4K. When you switch to 4K on Canon M50 with the kit lens on, it does seem like you’re using an 18-55 lens and zoomed in halfway through.
Wide-angle Lens
If you want to make the most of Canon M50’s 4K video quality, you better get a wide-angle lens for that. Since the Canon M50 mirrorless camera crops the footage in 4K, you won’t have any other option but to use a different lens. Moreover, if you want to vlog on Canon M50 with 4K video quality, I’d highly recommend getting a Canon 10-18mm lens with an adaptor or Canon 11-22mm lens for that.
Would You Shoot 4K Video on Canon M50?
I rate the Canon EOS M50 mirrorless camera very high as it’s a budget camera, offers 4K, 120 FPS, and touchscreen at an affordable price.
As far as shooting 4K is concerned, I won’t shoot 4K footage with Canon M50 for vlogs or videos whatsoever. Instead, I’d stick to 23.98 fps for all types of videos except for 120 fps slo-mo. If you’re wondering whether or not Canon M50 shoots 120 fps, then check out the blog post about that.
